At the very beginning, the jobseeker provides a professional summary that is clear and includes both specific expertise and soft skills. We learn right from the start that thi s partie is adaptable, proactive, motivational, and ethical (soft skills) while also learning that she is capable of ensuring staff coverage, managing shifts, training employees, and offering feedback (all crucial abilities for the job). This information is concise and easy to read, with the entire summary limited to three sentences.Moving on to the qualifications section, the jobseeker wisely provides a bulleted list complete with strong wording. The recruiter will be able to see that this person is engaging (highly interactive staff training), efficient, and a leader. Also in this section of the shift manager resume sample, the jobseeker includes specific technical skills (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint) to further emphasize that she would be a good employee. In the experience section of the shift manager resume sample, the jobseeker includes three positions covering about a decade of work history. Although this person probably did a great deal at each job, she takes care to include on ly the three most important job functions for each employer. This is crucial for keeping your resume clear and to the point. By using past-tense verbs for previous positions, the jobseeker allows the person reading the resume to quickly notice which work was done in the past. The education section at the end of the sample may seem to be lacking in bells and whistles, but it actually includes everything needed. The jobseeker gives her degree, the year she earned it, and the educational institution. Once again, this is clear and to the point for maximum readability. Why You Need a Strong Shift Manager ResumeShift managers are frequently in demand but often promoted from within, so especially if youre applying to a new company, its critical to have a strong resume. This is a well-paying and respectable field, so the competition can be stiff.Employers are looking for candidates who can really take the lead and perform the job well, so its important that your resume demonstrate that. Howe ver, creating a long, wordy document wont likely help you. On average, recruiters spend between 5 and 7 seconds on each resume the review before deciding whether to keep the candidates information for consideration. This means they arent taking the time to read large swaths of text. By creating a strong resume that is easy to skim, you increase your chances of getting an interview. With the help of our shift manager resume sample, you can create a strong document that hits behauptung notes.Costly Shift Manager Resume Mistakes To AvoidYoure certainly aware that you need to check your resume for spelling errors, grammatical issues, and typos before you send it in for consideration. You may also know that it needs to be visually appealing, without tiny text that makes the document difficult to read. However, while these are important mistakes to avoid, there are other series issues to steer clear from as well.Being a shift manager requires dynamic people and leadership skills. Your res ume needs to reflect these qualities, much like our shift manager resume sample does. Recruiters and hiring managers looking at your document should sense your authority and expertise in your words. Be careful not to come across as passive or wishy-washy about previous or current work or in your professional summary. Also remember that shift managers need to have solid technical skills when it comes to creating schedules, training employees, and managing workflow. Dont forget to include these as well.ConclusionCrafting a resume that reflects your skills and grabs the attention of recruiters can seem overwhelming, but it doesnt need to be. With our shift manager resume sample and tips, you can feel confident in the process. Remember to be clear in your professional summary, concise but thorough in your list of key skills, and authoritative with strong verbs in your work history. Youll get an interview in no time.

It can become lonely, so keep up hobbies and try to take advantage every benefit of working remotely.Do you have any strategies for staying efficient outside of an office? What tools do you use?I try to keep my work completely separated from my private life on my PC so that I wont get distracted. I try to keep a steady rhythm of when I work and during that time work is my number one priority. Multitasking is a fine thing, but leid if it reduces your productivity. At the start of the day, I get everything ready that Ill need while working (like drinks, snacks), and then I dont stop working until I reached my goal. How would you describe a typical work day?My typical workday starts early, where I catch up on everything I missed overnight (because the time zone difference). I take a lunch break, where I cook, walk with my dog and have a bit of free-time where I can work in the garden or in the house, depending on the weather. At around 3 p.m. I go back to work and finish my day by talking with everyone I need to talk to and work until around 6 p.m.What are the biggest challenges about working remotely? How have you overcome them?Working remotely, you have to master managing yourself and your time. If you are hired for a certain amount of time or project, you have to deliver. At home, everything can turn into a distraction??dirty dishes, laundry or my dog??but it is important to stay focused. I have been working from home for several years and even before that, I had to manage my own work in an office. I think always keeping an eye on what has to be done prepared me well for remote work at home.Tell us a little mora about your home life and how you spend your free time.I am German, 26- years-old and live in Denmark. Some of my free time is used up by going to language-school, which I will finish in November. My husband and I have a 2-year-old Bernese Mountain dog with whom I go to dog-training, teach her tricks, and take daily walks in the forest. The house that we are renovating together is keeping me entertained throughout the week and weekends. There is a little time for volleyball or beach visits, which I try to squeeze in as much as I can. What did you like best about working with PowerToFly?Well, I like that I am not alone. If I am unhappy or have questions, I have my PowerToFly talent manager who always responds quickly to my questions. Not to mention that I joined Power to Fly and got a job within the first few weeks One of the biggest challenges in alfruchtwein all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant a dvancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When was the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or hired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize on Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Educat ion and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next tischset of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

5 things you can start doing today to score your dream job

5 things you can start doing today to score your dream job5 things you can start doing today to score your dream jobFor some people, landing that dream job can feel like a bit of pipedream. After all, not everyone gets the chance to do what they want for the rest of their lives and get paid for it, right? But those whodoget to make money out of doing what they love would tell you that it absolutely can be done. That said, theres no fast way to get there - you have to continuously put in the hard work. Here are some things you can start doing today to score that dream jobFollow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreStart smallUnfortunately, you cant expect to get your dream job right away- you have to work your way up. Its important to understand what roles will get you to where you want to be. For example, TV producers dont start out as producers right away. You need to gain the right set o f skills and a reasonable amount of experience. The Telegraph explains that you need to develop a profile for your dream job, which means finding opportunities to prepare you for the role. Look for additional educational courses or online learning that will benefit you. Another good way is to talk to a career coach and get assessments on the improvements you need to make to help you get your dream job.Be proactiveIf youre currently employed and youre looking to go to the next level, step up.The Motley Fool points out that simply clocking in, day in and day out, wont cut it and it doesnt necessarily qualify you for better opportunities. In incredibly saturated industries like marketing and creative companies, if you dream of reaching a top role you have to proactively ask your boss what you need to do to land that role. Volunteer for projects and tasks that dont normally fall under your current job description. Show some initiative to move up the ladder by actively looking for new way s to help your team and the business.Develop your networking skillsCosmopolitan notes that networking can land you your dream job, but you have to remember that its a two-way street. Make yourself available for people without waiting for them to return the favour immediately. In the legal industry, for example, connections are vital to success.U.S. Legal consulting firm Special Counsel reveals that 70% of their associate placementsare actually for positions that were never advertised or posted publicly. This is a direct reflection of not just their job market knowledge, but also how they rely on long-term strategic partnerships between leading law firms and their swimming-pool of experienced associates. In any industry, genuine bonds, in your company and outside of it, will help you reach your goals because these people are more likely to recommend you and promote your talent.Appreciate criticismEven though you know youre good at what you do, you cant possibly know everything- youre bound to make mistakes So, learn to take criticism as a positive thing. Not enough people use criticism to their advantage. For one, when you know your weaknesses, you have a better chance of making the necessary improvements. Criticism can also serve as a great motivator- everything you learn about yourself through feedback can serve as inspiration to try and do better the next time around.Take risksIts never too late to go after your dream job, especially if youre in one that doesnt fulfil you.In this post, we discussed that if your gut is telling you that something isnt right, then it probably isnt. If your current job isnt rewarding, take the risk and open yourself up to other opportunities. Let your new and improved networking skills guide you to your dream job. Dont be afraid to reach out to people and express your desires for a new role. If your current company isnt appreciating what you bring to the team, you have every right to chase after a career that will make you happy .This article first appeared on A Girl in Progress.

Time to Self-Identify as a Military Spouse in your Resume

Time to Self-Identify as a Military Spouse in your ResumeTime to Self-Identify as a Military Spouse in your ResumeTime to Self-Identify as a Military Spouse in your Resume The Stars Are Lined Up for Military Spousestrainings in Ft. Rucker, AL and San Diego, CAby Bobbi Rossiter,USMC Military Spouse, Speaker and Military Spouse Coachmilspouse June 5, 2019In May, I gave three Military Spouse trainings on bases to deliver an important glaubenszeugnis Now is the time for Military Spouses to self-identify as such, and TIME TO UPDATE YOUR RESUME BOTH FEDERAL AND PRIVATE SECTOR In the past, Military Spouses were afraid to disclose their status as a partner of service personnel. They feared it would lead to employers rejecting their resumes due to their frequent moves and inconsistent work history. But times have changedA little background. Back in 2008, President George W. Bush signed Executive buchung 13473 which requires federal agencies to do more to employ Military Spouses. Just since 2017, the number of jobs specifically targeting Military Spouses has increased 70% on USAJOBS. On the private sector side, there has also been a push to hire more Military Spouses, including the U.S. Chamber of Commerces Hiring 100K Military Spouse initiative. However, if you dont identify as a Military Spouse on your resumes, how is an employer supposed to know this is your background? All the attendees at the trainings received federal employment expert Kathryn Troutmans new book, The Stars Are Lined Up for Military Spouses for Federal Careers, 2nd Edition, updated and just released in May. I welches a contributing author on the book and my resume welches included since I am an eleven-year Military Spouse. At the workshops, I talked about the excellent Military Spouse resume samples in the book, which show the three ways to self-identify as a Military Spouse on your resume (more on that later). There are six federal resumes and two private industry resumes in the guidebook. My first stop was on May 16th at Fort Rucker, Alabama where the training was held in the Army Community Services Soldier Service Center building. The event was organized by Mike Kozlowski, a Ten Steps to a Federal Job coach as well as the bases Employment Readiness Program Manager. Fifteen Military Spouses participated, including those shown in the photo below. My session, The Stars Are Lined Up for Military Spouses, was in the afternoon, and it was a great follow-up to Mikes Ten Steps to a Federal Job Workshop in the morning.Bobbi Rossiter and Mike Kozlowski, a Ten Steps to a Federal Job Trainer as well as Fort Ruckers Employment Readiness Program Manager, with Military Spouse attendees at the bases training.I had two trainings in San Diego, so I promoted the events through a podcast interview with Adrianne Huls, of the San Diego Military Family Collaborative. I talked about how developing your professional career when youre a Military Spouse is a little like playing the game, Tetris. The mi litary is going to hand you different experiences and obstacles. How are you going to rotate those to get a foundation that will get you to your ultimate goal? You can listen to my interview on the San Diego Military Family Collaboratives Facebook page.At the US Coast Guard Station San Diego on May 20th, I did intimate one-on-one trainings with two Military Wives. This was organized by Jennifer Conole, the Transition and Relocation Manager, USCG Base LA/Long Beach. The final training at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) in San Diego was an all-day affair organized by Connie Vasquez, a Family Member Employment Assistance Specialist. Thirty-four participants gathered at the Bayview Restaurant, a gorgeous site on base. The Military Spouse Career Symposium started with networking with employment support staff from the region. Then the Symposium had numerous speakers, including Connie and myself in the morning. Due to this being a recruitment base, most of the Military Spouses were ju st out of school and starting careers. I thought it was wonderful for them to have all this information right at the start.Laura Torres (Careers Manager, Blue Star Families), Mina Threat (Transition and Career Resource Manager, MCRD), Bobbi Rossiter, Jen Conole (Transition Relocation Manager, USCG Base LA/Long Beach), Connie Vasquez (Family Member Employment Assistance Specialist, MCCS San Diego-Marine Family Programs/WRR)The Employer Panel in the afternoon was very affirming. Connie had brought in both federal and private sector employers, including the Social Security Administration, Hertz, and 24 Hour Fitness. The employers verified the importance of the Military Spouses identifying themselves. Otherwise they said they could interpret the disjointed work history typical of this group as a red flag.To me, this affirmation was worth the whole trip This is what we have been hearing, but to hear the whole panel say they are looking for Military Spouses but need to know who you are was wonderful. Military Spouses, you really need to make yourselves visible.Employers Panel at the MCRDs Military Spouse Career Symposium in San Diego.Yes, employers want to hire Military Spouses,so let them know thats you through your resume. All the trainings, based on the new book, offered three ways to self-identify as a Military Spouse1. By adding an Eligibility Statement or Your Military Spouse Status right at the top, under your name and address. On federal resumes, for instance, right away this points out that you are eligible to be hired on a non-competitive basis as a Military Spouse under Executive Order 13473. We consider this way to be mandatory for all Military Spouse resumes. (For federal resume example, see p. 47 in the book, Nicole Black, the entrepreneurial Military Spouse. For where to place this on a private industry resume, see p. 54, Nicole Blacks traditional two-page resume.)After that, you can add one of the following two ways to reinforce the message.2. By ad ding a Summary of Your PCS Order History. This helps to put your entire resume in context. Your PCS buchens are why you have changed jobs frequently or may have periods of no employment. (Also on p. 47 in the book.) 3. By adding Professional Skills Gained Outside Employment While a Military Spouse as Your First Job Block. Ann, the Military Wife using this approach in her federal resume, hadnt had an official employer for 22 years. Yet she was able to use skills from various volunteer positions, including her functions maintaining a military household, to land a job as a Protocol Officer. (For federal resume example, see p. 80 in the book, Ann Jones, the long-time unemployed Military Spouse. For a private industry resume example, see my two-page traditional resume on p. 65).Another point I emphasized at all the trainings there are people at most military bases who we have trained in the Ten Steps to a Federal Job method. They can help you identify yourself as a Military Spouse on yo ur resume so employers will know this about you. That includes in the States as well as overseas. Click here to find a coach in your area. During my trainings in May, I kept referring the Military Spouses to their local trainers so they would know who they are and could go get additional assistance later. As the sessions wrapped up, I could see I had added a spark to the participants by letting them know that employers are looking specifically for Military Spouses. They were telling me, I have to update my resume so my background is there They were also encouraged about the federal job search, knowing that the Ten Step trainers are available right on the base to support them. They can help you with your private industry search too.Its an exciting moment to be a Military Spouse. The stars are lined up for you your time is nowINTERESTED IN A STARS ARE LINED UP FOR MILITARY SPOUSES PRESENTATION at your base? How to Position Yourself as the Top Job Candidate

How to Position Yourself as the Top Job Candidate How to Position Yourself as the Top Job Candidate After spending the time, energy, and money looking and applying for a job, you don’t want your resume and cover letter to get lost in the applicant pool. Naturally, you  want to be the top job candidate. Your application needs to  stand out and shine- and get you a call from the hiring manager for a job interview! Position yourself as the top job candidate with these tips that are bound to impress any potential employer: Do your research. Imagine you’re sitting across from your interviewer and he asks you a general question testing your knowledge of the company- and you’re clueless how to answer it. Ideally, you should do some research before your job interview so that you have an understanding of what the company does, its mission,  some of  its history, and its current standing in the marketplace. But it doesn’t stop there- you should also ask ahead of time who you’ll be interviewing with and know their names and titles, and a bit about what they do for the company, too. Customize your job application. Although it’s easier (and certainly faster) to churn out generic job applications, you might not have much job search success using that method. While it’s more time-consuming, it’s in your best interest to customize your job application for each and every job you apply for. That means making sure that your work experience, skills, and education align with the job description, and then highlighting those in your job application. Then, use your cover letter to show off your research by referencing some facts about the company and why you would be a match for the position. Know the employer’s needs. Every job represents a need within a company. Depending on the job you’re applying for, it might be a marketing need, an accounting need, an HR need, etc. As a top job candidate, show a potential employer that you understand exactly what he needs, and how you can help him achieve his goals via your skills, knowledge, and experience. By expressing to the company what you can do for them (instead of what you want them to do for you), you can make yourself a much more attractive job candidate and increase your chances of getting a job offer. Don’t forget to follow up. Between applying for jobs, doing research, and interviewing with companies, it can be easy to forget to follow up with employers. So take the time to send a thank-you note to each person you interview with. By offering thanks for meeting with you, it gives you the opportunity to reiterate how much you want the position and also to keep you in a potential employer’s mental forefront, particularly when he’s making his decision on who to hire. Be gracious. You might get turned down for a job that you really wanted. Even if your initial reaction is to be upset, send a thank-you email- even if you don’t get the job. Why? For one thing, it shows a level of graciousness that other job applicants might not express. Plus, you never know if the applicant who initially got hired for the position will work out or not, or if another job might open up in the future that the hiring manager could recommend you for.

Drunk on Duty, Article 112 of the UCMJ

Drunk on Duty, Article 112 of the UCMJ Drunk on Duty, Article 112 of the UCMJ Information derived from Manual for Court Martial, 2002, Chapter 4, Paragraph 36 Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) is a Congressional code of military criminal law that is applicable to all military members. One section of the UCMJ deals with the punishment for any military member who is found to be drunk while on duty. “Any person subject to this chapter other than sentinel or look-out, who is found drunk on duty, shall be punished as a court-martial may direct.” Elements. (1) That the accused was on a certain duty; and (2) That the accused was found drunk while on this duty. Explanation. (1) Drunk. See paragraph 35c(6). (2) Duty. “Duty” as used in this article means military duty. Every duty which an officer or enlisted person may legally be required by superior authority to execute is necessarily a military duty. Within the meaning of this article, when in the actual exercise of command, the commander of a post, or of a command, or of a detachment in the field is constantly on duty, as is the commanding officer on board a ship. In the case of other officers or enlisted persons, “on duty” relates to duties or routine or detail, in garrison, at a station, or in the field, and does not relate to those periods when, no duty being required of them by orders or regulations, officers and enlisted persons occupy the status of leisure known as “off duty” or “on liberty.” In a region of active hostilities, the circumstances are often such that all members of a command may properly be considered as being continuously on duty within the meaning of this article. So also, an officer of the day and members of the guard, or of the watch, are on duty during their entire tour within the meaning of this article. (3) Nature of offense. It is necessary that the accused be found drunk while actually on the duty alleged, and the fact the accused became drunk before going on duty, although material in extenuation, does not affect the question of guilt. If, however, the accused does not undertake the responsibility or enter upon the duty at all, the accused’s conduct does not fall within the terms of this article, nor does that of a person who absents himself or herself from duty and is found drunk while so absent. Included within the article is drunkenness while on duty of an anticipatory nature such as that of an aircraft crew ordered to stand by for flight duty, or of an enlisted person ordered to stand by for guard duty. (4) Defenses. If the accused is known by superior authorities to be drunk at the time duty is assigned, and the accused is thereafter allowed to assume that duty anyway, or if the drunkenness results from an accidental overdosage administered for medicinal purposes, the accused will have a defense to this offense. But see paragraph 76 (incapacitation for duty).

Study Women CEOs are more likely to face termination than men

Study Women CEOs are more likely to face termination than men Study Women CEOs are more likely to face termination than men Women CEOs are still subject to discrimination irrespective of the success of their company, according to a new study, published in Journal Management, which observed 641 CEO dismissals between 2000 and 2014.The study defined “dismissal” as the termination of an employee younger than sixty that wasn’t informed by health issues or the acceptance of another position. The data concluded that women CEOs were 45% more likely to be dismissed than male CEOs.Both were found to be as likely to be fired if the company was performing poorly but when the firm was performing well more women CEOs were consistently dismissed.Business Insider suspects implicit bias to be a potential factor with the inclusion of a link to a  piece written by reporter Rachel Gillet. Only eight out of the 100 most loved CEOs are women.  Additionally, women that negotiate for promotions were found to receive feedback that branded them as “intimidating”, “too aggressive” or “bossy.”It’s not all grim business, howeverLast Friday NBC News revealed that 2018 saw 175 women replace male CEOs and about 52% of open chief executive slots were filled by women.  It must be said that these numbers give considerably less cause for optimism when observed against the big picture: fewer than 5% of Fortune 500 companies are lead by women (these companies experienced a 25% drop in female CEOs as recently as last year).2018 saw the number of women CEOS increase dramatically; a record 264 women replacement CEOS were appointed out of the 1,183 studied which accounts for roughly 22%â€" an admirable improvement from 2017’s 18%.On the subject, Challenger, Gray Vice President Andrew Challenger had this to say:“The rate of women CEO replacements has risen steadily since 2014. It’s the highest rate of women CEO replacements since we began tracking gender data in 2013. As companies grapple with increased awareness surrounding gender equality issues, such as pay parity and eliminating sexual harass ment and gender discrimination, they appear to be hiring and promoting women candidates into the top role. This is crucial to creating an environment where bullying and harassment based on gender is eliminated.”A promising omen for the start of 2019.

5 work-life balance asks to request instead of a raise

5 work-life balance asks to request instead of a raise 5 work-life balance asks to request instead of a raise When most professionals consider the goal of review season, their first instinct is to chase after more zeroes on their paycheck. A higher salary is most notably associated with success - after all, as you climb the ladder, you expect to be compensated for your ascent. But as career and branding expert Wendi Weiner explains, sometimes a raise may not be in the future due to time or budget constraints. While unfortunate and disappointing, you shouldn’t just throw in your hand and wave a white flag in defeat. Instead of only strategizing for monetary gains, professionals are encouraged to chase after a different type of satisfaction: balance! Whether you are seeking new employment and bargaining the terms of your hire or you’re discussing your trajectory at your current company, there are plenty of asks to make that make your life - in and outside of the office - that much happier. Here, some worth fighting for:Professional development opportunitiesMaybe you aren’t currently eli gible for an uptick in your take-home pay, but an investment in your skills are in the cards. Weiner suggests approaching your manager to see if he/she would help fund a new professional certification to help enhance your training or education. This might be a leadership course or technical class at a local college, a mini MBA - or a full one. It’s an ask plenty of savvy workers are starting to bargain for, according to Weiner. If your business is lean and doesn’t have the funds to support, don’t fret.Weiner notes there are other routes: “Consider also obtaining additional training by attending workshops, seminars, and other conferences to ramp up your skills and knowledge and see if your boss will help get you thereby supporting the financial aspects of it.”Remote workTo save on the high cost of office space and to attune to the new digital landscape that makes working from anywhere not only realistic but effective - it isn’t unreasonable to approach your boss about re mote work. Even if you only shoot for a work-remotely Friday situation or the option to be away from your desk three times a month of your choice, business coach Christine Argo says it’s a smart idea.“Not only will this give you the freedom to set your own work hours - as long as you are available when you are needed - it will also reduce your commuting expenses, whether that’s subway fare, train or gas, and tolls and in the end, can actually give you more time to work, because you cut out the travel time,” she continues.Start-up fundsIf you happen to be in the entrepreneur world, your CEO will likely be open-minded to your own forward-thinking aspirations. When your manager isn’t able to meet your salary requirements, explain other ways to fulfill and further your career at the company by illustrating your desire to start something of your own. Professor Dr. Wendy Osefo says that while this request is often seen in academic or research fields, it is making its way to ot her industries.“Start-up funding is when the employer gives the employee and specified amount of money to spend towards developing and or launching an outside venture,” she explains. “This allows for you the employee to spend time developing a project you are passionate about with both the financial and creative capital of your employer.”More paid time offEuropeans are flabbergasted by the lack of paid time off for American workers and for good reason: there are no required out-of-office days by the government. Rather, it is fully up to the employer to decide what’s fair. If you’re feeling cheated by finances, Weiner urges professionals to make a case for more PTO.“Approach your boss and negotiate additional perks that may include reimbursement for extra days off for that vacation you have been longing to take,” she says.If you’ve been with your company for more than a few years, it’s appropriate to try for more than just a day or two. Weiner says to go for anoth er week.Wellness at workMaybe your boss can’t give you a larger income, but can they contribute to your health? Argo says they sure can if you defend the need for wellness programs. Whether a yoga class, healthy snacks in the office or all of the above, come prepared with easy-to-implement solutions.“Maybe that empty ‘box’ room could have some workout equipment. Maybe lunchtime and after work, they could bring in a yoga teacher or meditation expert to help support not only your well-being but everyone’s,” she explains. If you need proof, Argo reminds there are plenty of studies that demonstrate the positive effects these activities have on productivity and workplace satisfaction.

How to fix things when an email chain spirals out of control

How to fix things when an email chain spirals out of control How to fix things when an email chain spirals out of control Emails, Slack messages, and other forms of business communication can go wildly wrong when someone says something that could be misconstrued and you’ve entered into a certifiable misunderstanding. Here’s how to put out the fire - and what to do instead.Talk it out in these waysDavid Maxfield, an author, speaker, social scientist, and Vice President of Research at VitalSmarts, writes in the Harvard Business Review that you should meet face-to-face.“An in-person meeting is the gold standard,” he writes. “Seeing each other’s faces while you talk is far more important than people realize. It helps you understand what others are thinking and feeling, as well as what they are saying. If that’s not possible, then use a video conferencing app.”The publication also recommends  simply calling the person. This could be helpful if you don’t work in the same office space or have never met before.Better luck next time - try this insteadHere’s how both parties can (hopefully) a void misunderstandings in the future.Don’t send anything that could be misinterpretedThis goes for emojis, GIFs, and words.Yes, they’re a fun way to express yourself in the moment, but you’ll want to make sure you don’t send anything that could be deemed offensive to someone else now or in a future context. Also keep in mind that your “private” office messages aren’t really private. If you’re having reservations about something, you might not want to send it at all. Save yourself the trouble.Be clear from the beginningAvoid potential pitfalls by not beating around the bush. You could also consider emphasizing that you’re open to questions if your words or data are unclear, so that the recipient feels more comfortable reaching out if they don’t understand something.Being up front from the beginning might save time â€" the other person may not be as likely to hesitate to contact you.Don’t be afraid to clarifyBetter safe than sorry, right? This works for both the sen der and the recipient.Karen Lachtanski, Director of Global PR and Media Relations at Y Soft, writes in Entrepreneur about how asking questions can help you figure out someone’s tone over email.“No matter how clear your counterpart in the conversation strives to be, sometimes confusion ensues,” she writes. “When you’re really stumped and don’t want things to become more tangled, it’s perfectly fine to come right out and ask, ‘Sorry, I think we may have misunderstood each other. Did I say something that offended you?’ or ‘Sorry, I think my message may have been confusing. What I meant was….”Hopefully, such clarity up front will save you time when misunderstandings are avoided.

Why Small Business Must Compete on Compensation in 2015

Why Small Business Must Compete on Compensation in 2015 Why Small Business Must Compete on Compensation in 2015 Why Small Business Must Compete on Compensation in 2015 Rossheim Small businesses enjoyed something of a compensation honeymoon in the years following the 2007-2009 recessionary years. Workers were so relieved to stay employed or to get any kind of job offer that many never considered bargaining for more. But the honeymoon may be over. Today, growing companies must learn to compete for talent with companies of all sizes, everywhere in the world, in all arenas, including employee compensation. Heres a roundup of small business compensation trends and challenges for 2015. Inequitable pay can be toxic. Inequity in pay can be particularly destructive to employee morale and loyalty in small firms where its hard to keep secrets. Companies definitely should be concerned about pay equity, but this often gets neglected, says Elissa Tucker, research program manager for human capital management at business research nonprofit APQC. People will get disengaged quickly if new hires come in at a significantly higher rate. This is easy to overlook. Fixed pay, high attrition? Performance-based compensation, long popular for most businesses of any size, is, in 2015, a virtual necessity. Still, some 28 percent of small companies do not offer variable pay incentives, according to the PayScale 2015 Compensation Best Practices report. Why? Small business owners have a lot of balls in the air they may not thinking holistically about the elements of pay, says Tim Low, Vice President of Marketing at consulting firm Payscale. Small businesses worry more about the risks of variable pay, but its the market trend. In the past, this has meant the average salary at many small companies has lagged in relation to the overall market. Of course, failing to pay for performance raises another risk: attrition of top performers. Variable pay: Ever broader and deeper. In 2015, its not enough to offer to performance-based pay to just a few top managers. Variable pay has been broadened to include all employees in many organizations, says Ken Abosch, a partner with consulting firm Aon Hewitt. Average variable pay has reached a record high level of 12 percent of total pay. Which variable-pay schemes are winning? Small businesses often gravitate to the simplest kind of performance bonuses: spot bonuses granted spontaneously for a job well done this month or even today. But such bonuses may not align well with the companys long-term strategy, and they can appear arbitrary. There are superior options, though they require more work to implement. Individual performance bonuses for reaching specific goals are very popular, says Abosch. The most popular performance-based bonus rewards a mix of company, business unit and individual achievements. Company owners may not make the best compensation managers. With competition for talent heating up, small-business chiefs should consider getting expert advice on their compensation plans. Because when owners set pay on their own, intuitively would be the diplomatic word for how they do it, says Tim Low at PayScale. The personality type is not afraid to dive in. Some 52 percent of small-company chiefs set pay structures themselves, according to PayScales 2015 Compensation Best Practices report. Larger companies are more likely to have a human resources manager or executive with expertise in compensation. Small companies win big talent with bigger money. Small business can win against larger ones in talent skirmishes if theyve got the payroll budget. In the last five to eight years, Atlanta has seen a group of more entrepreneurial, very profitable organizations that are keeping their people ahead of the comp curve, says Frank Green, president of search firm ExecuSearch. Green is currently working with two candidates interviewing for jobs at smaller companies: one could land a $16,000 increase for a position in healthcare finance; the other is campaigning for a senior accounting role that would come with a $40,000 raise. Total compensation statements: High value, low cost. Often overlooked, individualized total compensation statements, distributed to all employees annually, are a wise (and inexpensive) way to remind staff that their compensation is more than just the net pay line on the pay stub. Total compensation statements help management communicate the full value of what youre giving them, says Low. The ability to enumerate all the elements may open employees eyes to the value of healthcare, dental, and vision insurance, and so on. According to PayScales 2015 compensation survey, 58 percent of respondents reported that they do not offer them. Payroll alert for 2016: Health insurance requirement. Under the Affordable Care Act, if your business has between 50 and 99 employees or reaches that headcount in 2015, youll be required to provide health insurance to full-time workers in 2016, or pay a tax penalty. (Unless this requirement is postponed, again.) In any case, if you dont insure your workers now, start planning for this major payroll expense and think about how you can leverage that investment to attract better workers and retain employees.

The eight-hour workday has no place in modern society heres why

The eight-hour workday has no place in modern society â€" here's why The eight-hour workday has no place in modern society - here's why The thought of clocking in and out of the  workplace  can make us feel like robots. When we clock in at 9 a.m. and clock out at 5 p.m. (or 6 p.m. or even 8 p.m.), it feels like we  have lost the  passion  that fuels us.As an adult, how do you know that you have worked hard enough? With the eight-hour work shift, typical indicators include getting tenure, a  promotion, a  raise  or you’ve become physically exhausted with all the fieldwork,  meetings, paperwork, emails, etc.The eight-hour work shift is a standard that was set when  manufacturing  and industrial work were the main livelihoods for the majority of the public. But the world has changed. People can do work that has no physical output or assembly line. We live in the 21st  century, where information has become the paramount product and the asset for many professions. Yet we bind ourselves within the same, antiquated eight-hour standard to drive our productivity and  evaluate our performance. And that’s just unfairIndustri al Age  jobs  were physically demanding. The  Adamson Act  was passed in response to factory workers’ need to safeguard their health and rights. For manufacturing jobs, the output and the over-extension of oneself are easy to observe and measure within the eight-hour shift. But with knowledge jobs, which are increasing both in number and complexity, performance indicators and signs of overextending oneself are less obvious. Many knowledge workers are unsure whether they are over or underworked, especially if the standards they impose on themselves exist within a strict eight-hour work period.Sometimes, we also feel bad if we are unproductive within the work schedule that has been set for us. It becomes a  failure  in discipline and willpower if we cannot focus and work, work, work within the eight hours. For jobs that require a massive amount of creativity, curiosity and  flexibility, the eight-hour work shift is irrelevant and, at times, constraining.I won’t attempt to claim tha t we should abolish the eight-hour work shift. Some professionals rely on structure and schedule to accomplish gargantuan tasks and meet  deadlines  that they would be ill equipped to handle in solitude. You can still be productive within a nine-to-five job. Some people prefer the sense of control it affords. What’s important is to know that you have the option to get out of it if you feel that it mutes your creativity. Doing so becomes a question of whether you can drive your own productivity or not.  Do you make time to think? Do you allow your curiosity to run wild? Do you reflect on what truly powers your creativity? How can you establish discipline in your creative work?Yes, some jobs will totally collapse in the absence eight-hour work shift, but some thrive. All we need to do is take a look at  entrepreneurs  who regulate their own time to meet the productivity, creativity and efficiency requirements of running a business on a tight  budget. Structure and discipline should s till find their way into the work attitudes of people who rely on thinking to perform well in their jobs.So how do we find what works for us?As knowledge workers, we need to spend time thinking and feeding our curiosity through activities like reading. As Warren Buffett’s business partner, Charlie Munger, said in an  interview  with  CNBC, “In my whole life, I have known no wise people who didn’t read all the time - none, zero.”  Munger has also been known to have said this about his partner, “I would say half of all the time [Buffett] spends is sitting on his ass and reading. He has a lot of time to think.”Reading books  is something we often place on the back burner and constantly promise to get to after the day; a.k.a.  the eight hours (or more) that we have to fill at the office.Knowledge does not stopBy focusing on putting in the hours at work, rather than putting in the quality of work, we run the risk of working our mental engine on the same, overused and gunky mental oil. When we stop  learning, we cut ourselves off a major fuel source that could power our career for years to come, and not to mention our personal lives. At first, moving away from the eight-hour work shift may feel like we are working less, but after awhile you will realize that it makes perfect sense. We must keep on building our knowledge, curiosity and  creativity. This post originally appeared on Fairygodboss and has been reprinted with permission.
